The first section of the book is all about Jody and Billy’s raising of the pony. It’s also about Jody’s relationship with his dad, and about Billy Buck (the hired hand) and the pressure he puts on himself to keep Jody’s dreams alive.
It’s the story of Jody, a young boy who’s given a pony by his dad to raise and ride, and the amount of investment Jody puts into the pony and things that are out of his control. Reading it again, I wasn’t wrong about that short description but I found myself totally drawn into it again even knowing what was coming. I kind of had lumped The Red Pony in my head with The Pearl as those two really short Steinbeck books where terrible things happen. I’ve previously read this book, but didn’t have The Leader of the People (Part IV) in it, so I read it again to refresh my memory. This is a review for the Four Part version of The Red Pony.
